General Questions
Q: How do I contact the Missouri State Board of Nursing?
A: The Missouri State Board of Nursing can be reached at 573-751-0681 or nursing@mail.state.mo.us.
Q: How do I renew my nursing license?
A: To renew your nursing license you need to contact the Missouri State Board of Nursing. They are the licensing agency for registered nurses in the State of Missouri.
Q: How can I find out how many nursing contact hours I need to maintain by certification?
A: You need to contact the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC can be reached at 202-651-7000 or on the web at www.nursecredentialing.org.
Q: How many hours can a nurse work in a 24-hour period?
A: We frequently receive calls from nurses asking is there a limit to the number of hours a nurse can work. Unfortunately, there are no limits prescribed by state or federal law. You must work as many hours as the employer requires or be subject to disciplinary action and possible termination unless you are a member of a collective bargaining unit. This would be addressed in your contract if you were represented by a collective bargaining agreement. In that case, the employer is legally required to abide by the contract. In the event you are scheduled to work hours longer than what you believe is safe to provide patient care, you should complete an Assignment Despite Objection form (available to MONA members) documenting why you believe these hours create an unsafe patient assignment. For more information on this process, e-mail MONA staff at info@missourinurses.org.
MONA is collaborating with the MO Hospital Association through the MO Technical Advisory Committee to develop proposed regulations limiting the number of hours nurses can safely work and prescribing appropriate rest periods between shifts. MONA is also working to pass legislation on patient safety through the restriction of mandatory overtime.
