Workplace Issues

EGW Member Brazos The UAN Leadership Institute was spectacular!

It was inspiring to be in the company of so many self-actualized nurses. The economic and history lessons were revelations for me. They put the past and present into perspective, for a long-view of the big picture. They defined the ability and purpose that unions have for balancing economic and political power.

The Haymarket Tragedy: Labor History tour was very moving! We visited the monument of the Haymarket Square tragedy, and learned what happened there. Haymarket was to have been a peaceful rally in support of workers who had been killed the previous day, marching, and asking for an eight hour day (enacted already in 1882). The “eight hour day” was cherished then and what it means today. Similarities exist in the current lop-sided distribution of wealth in America and current influx the immigrant population that creates questions of policy. In 1886, the response was the Labor movement. In 2006, among professionals it is the answer now too!

We visited the court house where "justice was on trial." And we visited the monument and burial site of the five anarchists/martyrs of Haymarket in Oak Park cemetery. The monument has flowers on it any day of the year left by people that come from everywhere. How did we miss Haymarket in our public-school educations?

Lobbying and the Legislative Process is an important tool everyone can use to influence public policy. It is important to remember, YOU are the boss and grassroots is where democracy happens! Just include your address and zip-code at the top of your letters to your elected representatives in Government, make it brief, and limit yourself to one issue per letter.

Mandating Nurses was a suggested point to address. Also of interest, the states of Ohio and Kentucky are considering in their state legislatures bills making it a felony to assault a nurse in the hospital workplace.
