CE Approver Unit

Approver Committee

The MONA CE Approver Unit is administratively and operationally responsible for coordinating all aspects of the peer review approval process of continuing nursing education activities and approved providers for the Association. The MONA CE Approver Unit has been operational since 1978. It was accredited at that time by the American Nurses Association and has maintained accreditation as an approver of continuing nursing education.

The Nurse Peer Review Leader is responsible for the CE Approver Unit and is assisted by a full time Continuing Education Coordinator who is a member of the MONA staff assigned to the CE program. The Nurse Peer Review Leader also serves as the CE Approver Unit Chairperson and is responsible for coordinating the approval process of the CE Approver Unit. The Continuing Education Coordinator has the responsibility of coordinating the office administration of the CE Approver Unit. The CE Approver Unit also includes ten additional volunteers who function as committee members in matters pertaining to the Approver Unit’s structure and functions, and as nurse peer reviewers in implementing the approval activities of the Approver Unit. The peer review process is carried out by subcommittees of three peer reviewers, one of whom functions as the subcommittee chair. The CE Approver Unit Chairperson and subcommittee members are volunteers appointed by the MONA Board of Directors for two-year terms. The Approver Unit peer reviewers are MONA members, have the academic credentials required by the ANCC criteria, and have expertise with staff development and continuing education in a variety of practice settings, and who represent a variety of practice areas. The MONA Board of Directors considers geographic representation when selecting members as well as experiential and educational qualifications.

As a standing committee of the Association, it is the responsibility of the CE Approver Unit to:
  1. Implement a peer review process utilizing the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation criteria for approval of nursing continuing education activities,
  2. Provide a mechanism for verification of quality for CNE programs,
  3. Encourage nurses to maintain and improve knowledge and skills of professional practice; and,
  4. Foster availability and accessibility of CE programs throughout the state.
