As the voice of nursing in Missouri, the Missouri Nurses Association (MONA) is a member of several statewide coalitions. These coalitions provide us with the opportunity to promote registered professional nursing and to work towards assuring quality, affordable, accessible health care for the people of Missouri. Following is a listing as well as a description of the various coalitions to which MONA belongs. If available, a link to coalition websites is provided to facilitate your search for additional information.
ANA Constituent Assembly – Official body of ANA comprised of the President and Chief Executive Officer of the constituent member organizations (CMA) of ANA. The CA acts in an advisory capacity to the ANA Board of Directors.
Midwest States Coalition – Coalition of Midwest CMAs who meet informally as part of the Constituent Assembly (CA) meeting. They have no authority; however, they influence issues through reports to the CA. Their purpose is to identify trends and issues in Midwestern states. All of the states are divided into regions and meet in conjunction with the CA meetings.
SNA Labor Coalition – The State Nurses Association Labor Coalition (SNALC) was formed prior to the official development of the United American Nurses (UAN). The SNALC consists of CMAs with collective bargaining programs. It meets in conjunction with the CA and UAN meetings to discuss trends and issues impacting collective bargaining. It has no official authority.
Missouri Department of Health Communicable Disease & Bio-terrorism AC – This advisory council reviews trends related to communicable diseases, including bio-terrorism agents, and makes recommendations to the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services on these issues.
Missouri Task Force on Misuse, Abuse and Diversion of Prescription Drugs – This task force is a Governor’s Task Force whose purpose is to identify trends related to the misuse of controlled substances and examine and recommended strategies for limiting the misuse, abuse and/or diversion of prescription drugs. This task force pertains to health care professionals.
Missouri State Board of Nursing – The Board of Nursing (MSBN) regulates the practice of nursing in Missouri.
Missouri Center for Patient Safety – A private, not-for-profit corporation that provides solutions and resources for reducing medical errors and improving patient safety. The Missouri Nurses Association is a bronze sponsor of MCPS.
Missouri End of Life Coalition – The Missouri End of Life (EOL) Coalition was formed in May 1998. The purpose of the coalition is to develop a statewide collaborative community-based group to address issues facing Missourians at the end of life. The EOL is committed to fostering cooperation, education, and research to promote high quality care for the dying. The coalition is comprised of health care providers and their associations, state regulatory agencies and consumers.
Missouri Nursing Coalition – The Missouri Nursing Coalition is comprised of MONA, the MO Organization of Nurse Executive, the MO League for Nursing, the MO State Board of Nursing and the MO State Association of Licensed Practical Nurses. The president and chief staff officer of each organization represents their organization at the quarterly meetings held in conjunction with Missouri State Board of Nursing meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to discuss key issues for each organization and determine what common course of action can be taken. The Coalition collaborates on statewide issues such as nursing shortages, as well as sponsors the annual Nursing Summit.
Technical Advisory Committee – This is a legislatively mandated Committee resulting from legislation sponsored by Rep. Joan Barry in 2000. The Committee is to sunset in 2006. The purpose of the Committee is to address issues related to the quality of nursing services and patient care. Representatives are appointed by the Director of the MO Dept. of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) and include 3 representatives from MONA, two from the MO Hospital Association, and 1 each from the MO State Medical Society and the MO State Association of LPNs and there is one public member. It is staffed by the MO DHSS. The Committee meets quarterly. MONA’s representatives are Desma Reno, chair, Louise Miller and Joan Barry.
Missouri Institute of Community Health – MICH is a coalition of various organizations partnering together in order to facilitate and promotes excellence in community systems for health and quality of life. This coalition has developed from a Robert Woods Johnson Turning Points Grant funding. MICH desires to be seen as an organization with the ability and influence to bring people together to work towards common goals. It is also striving to become a community-based collaborative/partnership that effectively addresses the health and health system goals for their community.
Missouri Cancer Consortium – A variety of state cancer control stakeholders participated in the first Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Cancer Society Leadership Institute in August 2000. The Missouri Cancer Consortium evolved following that meeting resulting in the creation of a consortium that is providing the infrastructure to develop a statewide comprehensive cancer control plan. The consortium is expanding and diversifying its membership, reaching out to school and faith-based groups; health maintenance organizations; health care providers; professional and voluntary organizations, advocates for patient rights, minorities, and senior citizens, the business sector and cancer survivors and their families. In addition to construction of a cancer control plan, additional goals for the next four years include reduction in the number of Missourians engaged in cancer related risk behaviors, reduction in disparities among priority populations, emphasis on early detection, treatment, palliation and patient issues and creations of a stronger evaluation mechanism for statewide data.
Missouri Consolidated School Health – This coalition looks at ways to improve the health of school age children through our schools.
Missouri Partnership on Smoking or Health - The Missouri Partnership on Smoking or Health (MPSH) is a network of diverse, enthusiastic, informed, and effective tobacco prevention advocates working throughout Missouri. MPSH mobilizes key constituencies who play a pivotal role in influencing public policy debate regarding tobacco use prevention. At the state level, MPSH works to pass and improve existing tobacco prevention legislation. At the local level, MPSH assists groups and organizations wanting to improve the health of their community through smoke free ordinances and other tobacco prevention policies. MPSH provides the tools they need to make their efforts become a reality. The MPSH web address is www.smokingorhealth.org.
Missouri Department of Heath and Senior Services Loan Repayment Program – This program was created through legislation from Missouri Nurses Association (MONA) in the 1980s. The program utilizes funds assessed from licensure fees to provide scholarships and loans to individuals pursuing a nursing career. There is an advisory committee to the program who identifies trends in nursing education and workforce projections and makes policy recommendations for the program.
Stroke Prevention – This advisory council is under the direction of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and is looking at ways to reduce the risk of strokes among Missourians.
Show Me Healthy Women – Another council of the MDHSS whose purpose is to improve the health of women in Missouri.
Missouri Association of Social Welfare – This is a membership organization open to concerned citizens and organizations working towards for the social welfare of Missourians. MONA is a member of this organization.
Obesity Council – The Council is appointed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to study and make recommendations related to the current health problem of obesity.
Missouri CALS Advisory Committee – This is a group that has received Flex Grant Funding to assist critical access hospitals in obtaining Comprehensive Advanced Life Support Course (CALS) education.
Health Care Stabilization Fund Feasibility Board – This is a Board within the Department of Insurance created to analyze medical malpractice data to determine whether a health care stabilization fund should be established in Missouri. As part of its duties, the board shall develop a comprehensive study detailing whether a health care stabilization fund is feasible within Missouri, or specified geographic regions thereof, or whether a health care stabilization fund would be feasible for specific medical specialties.
